Hazrat Inayat Khan on Education

This webcourse explains the influences on a child from conception to adulthood at age 21. Hazrat Inayat Khan's vision of the manifestation of a soul and its covering and uncovering through life is illuminating. His recommendations for care and education guarantee a holistic and supportive environment that will best prepare a child for the purpose of their life. Every parent and teacher of children should study this material in depth, and this webcourse provides a unique opportunity.

The webcourse is designed and taught by Dr. Catherine Warrick who is both an life-long educator, having taught at many levels from elementary through graduate school, and a 20-year student of the teachings of Hazrat Inayat Khan. Dr. Warrick, known to us as "Qahira", is the recipient of the IAM Lifetime Achievement Award for her contributions to the Message of the Heart. She is a senior teacher in IAM as well as a mentor. She has designed many educational programs for various age groups as dean of education at three different universities and as founder and director of "The Whole Brain Shop", an innovative learning center that was independent of her university efforts. We welcome her wedding her two primary fields of interest and expertise in this course.

The webcourse will run for 10 weeks, including an introductory week. The primary reading will be the first 100 pages of The Art of Personality which is volume III in the set The Sufi Message of Hazrat Inayat Khan. Purchasing this book is recommended, or you could read it free online.

Dr. Warrick has also included short, contemporary readings in the course which supplement the material from Hazrat Inayat Khan. It starts with influences on the child in-utero and goes on through to adulthood (21). Anyone who cares about children, youth, and/or education will find the material pertinent and challenging. Hazrat Inayat Khan's recommendations often depart from the way we are doing things today, but his reasons for his recommendations are well worth considering.

In this 11-week Webcourse you will learn:

  • What are the main influences on the child, in utero to adulthood.
  • The different stages of a child's life and the needs at each stage.
  • The most important factor in the education of children up to age 7.
  • To what degree to tolerate or encourage a child's intense activity.
  • To respect and nurture the child's angelic nature and kingship.
  • How to support and develop a child's beliefs and ideals.
  • How to instill the noble virtues in a youth so that they mature in his/her heart.
  • What work adults must do on themselves to become good guardians or teachers.

To help you evaluate the content and depth of this webcourse, we are making available the instructions for the first week. See these instructions here.

This webcourse focuses on Hazrat Inayat Khan's teachings about children, how to rear them and how to educate them. (Hazrat Inayat Khan was a contemporary of Maria Montessouri, who met him and took many of her education principles from his teaching.) The education of children was a major topic in his work, and his advice is even more important today. Several elementary schools have been started based on HIK principles, like the Seed School of Vera Corda in California, The Hollow Reed school in Boston, and the Mountain Road School at The Abode in New York. This is the first time that his teachings in education have been available as a webcourse, especially at the depth offered by this course.
