Spy Princess: The Life of Noor Inayat Khan
by Shrabani Basu Paperback
Spy Princess is the remarkable biography of Noor-un-nisa Inayat Khan, the daughter
of the Sufi master Hazrat Inayat Khan. Code-named Madeleine, Noor-un-nisa was the first
female wireless transmitter in Nazi-occupied France during WWII; she was trained by Britain's SOE
and assumed the most dangerous resistance post in underground Paris. She was eventually
betrayed into the hands of the Gestapo and subsequently executed at Dachau in 1944.
Courage, determination, strength,
sweetness, refinement, and sensitivity... These aren't qualities we think of going together.
A person who has these qualities beautifully developed in a personality of nobility is rare
indeed. We do have a wonderful example in our spiritual family, Noor-un-nisa Inayat Khan,
eldest daughter of Hazrat Inayat Khan, the Sufi Master
who is the source of our spiritual lineage.
Noor-un-nisa was an artist, musician, writer of children's stories, and poet. She was also
one of the bravest, most intrepid, and most effective spies in the British Secret Service
during World War II. I was moved to tears on page 1 of this wonderful biography by Shrabani Basu,
and I learned many new things about Noor-un-nisa.

There have been several biographies of Noor-un-nisa, but Spy Princess contains new
documents declassified by the British Government, as well as new interviews with family
members, including one of the last interviews given by Pir Vilayat Inayat Khan, the brother
of Noor-un-nisa, before his passing in 2004.
The story of Noor Inayat Khan transcends
nations and cultures. It is an intensely human story of a woman brought up to tell the truth
and eschew violence. Yet she fought as a spy and died in a Nazi concentration camp with the
word "Liberte" on her lips. Noor was Indian and french and British, a Sufi and a fighter, a
gentle musician and a brave soldier. This is why her appeal is cosmopolitan. --Lord Meghnad
Desai and Kishwar Desai
