The Exercises for Life

Part of the Method of Heart Rhythm Practice, The Exercises for Life are for use "off-the-bench", designed to shift one's attitude toward the heart in everyday life.

The Exercises for Life are organized by the dimension of the heart they develop. These exercises are examples of "Living from the Heart," but they are also developmental.

The experience of Heart Rhythm Meditation is what makes these exercises achievable, even natural, and the desire and attempt to do these exercises enlivens the meditation, giving it a focus. The intention to apply meditation draws out the experience of meditation.

The "dimensions of the heart" are described here, and are developed with examples and stories in the book Energize Your Heart. The following examples are taken from there. The number refers to one of the eight exercises given for each dimension of the heart.

The Four Dimensions of the Heart
Dimension A Sample Exercise for Life
Width 1. If there is anyone with whom you would not like to be alone in an elevator, that is your signal that a reconciliation with that person is needed, for the health of your own heart. Take the initiative to resolve your differences with that person so you do not have to fear them or be embarrassed by them. This will bring peace and contentment.
Depth 2. Feel another person. People are very different than they appear and even different than they think. Your feeling of another tells you more than their words and actions can.
Height 4. Hold fast to your high regard for others; don't let their weaknesses lower your opinion of them. Look for the best in people and they will come up to your estimation of them.
Forward 1. Feel the wish of your heart, that which your heart has wished for all your life, and still desires.
Inner 2. Design a rhythm for your day, week, month and year, and keep your rhythm. This conscious stability will allow your heart's capacity to increase.
