Dear Puran, I have been practicing the full breath since you posted your message, although I have cheated somewhat after reading your book and have been practicing the inverted triangle. I find this a pleasant and relatively easy experience although I have shallower-than-normal lung capacity from mild asthma. You asked about responses; well, I feel my pulse in my head (?) and it is especially strong around my nostrils. Does this have a meaning? I must say that I enjoy the messages from Hazyat Inayat Khan, I find them inspirational and they give added meaning to the directions that you are taking us. I notice that you have had one or two messages about smell. Two years ago I spent two weeks of Vipassana meditation in Sri Lanka. After returning home I found that I was completely intolerant of perfume, either in aftershaves (which I had to stop using), or in strong perfumes used by others. I have never heard of this before. You will be pleased to learn that my breath exercises mean more to me everyday, and I am always looking for opportunities to practice. Love,
Dear (Name), I see a connection between your previous experience of becoming intolerant to perfume after Vipassana meditation and your present experience of finding the heartbeat "strong around my nostrils." I have heard many times before that meditators become intolerant of strong odors, especially perfume scents. Rajneesh had this condition and had to post guards to sniff the people who entered his room. This comes from upward meditation, like Vipassana, Transcendental Meditation, and Kundalini Yoga. An extreme sensitivity occurs in all the senses so upward meditators become increasingly annoyed by physical stimuli like loud sounds, strong tastes, strong smells, and bright colors. It leads them to withdraw from stimulation, which is exactly the theme of upward meditation. In upward meditation one is removing conscioiusness from the body, and the body, especially the nervous system and circulatory system, suffers. The heartbeat becomes more irregular; the nervous system becomes overloaded. In contrast, downward meditation, like Heart Rhythm Meditation, increases the consciousness in the body and as a result the body operates more efficiently, with a larger capacity. The heartbeat becomes extremely regular; the nervous system has increased capacity. The Central Nervous System Activity increases greatly, indicating much greater communication between the parts of the body. When the pulse occurs spontaneously in some part of your body, it is a signal from your unconscious: "Look here!" So in your case, your nose is drawing your attention. The symbolic meaning of the nose is to be aware of the subtle sense of things. The literal meaning is to be aware of scents, that is, to undue the effect of withdrawing your consciousness from your body. With love, Puran #Response to Full Breath, Msg 21#
