This is a season of miracles.

This season is the time of the oldest celebration in the northern hemisphere, as the earth bows toward the sun and receives greater and greater light. The Goddess gives birth to the son of light so life is reborn anew and preserved forever again.

What are the miracles today? They are ordinary occurences in everyday living from the heart.

  1. A gang of drunken thugs looking for trouble encounters a older man weighed down with his luggage, walking along the street. Before they have a chance to think about how they'll beat him up and steal his goods, he calls out to them for help, praising their kindness and strength and addressing specific qualities of each one. Surprising themselves, they end up carrying his bags for him, walking quietly many blocks out of their way to deliver the man and his valuables safely to his destination, as he showers them with visions of their greatness at every step. They can be heard laughing as they depart, delighted and high on themselves, having had great fun from the adventure in which each man was reminded of his best self in front of the others. (From the life of Hazrat Inayat Khan)

  2. In a cafe, one man hears a slur against his religion and ethnicity spoken by a second man at another table. He hurls back a personal insult and the situation escalates to threats, intense shouting and both men shaking in anger. A third man steps between them and knows just what to say to each: "God is the Most Merciful and Compassionate" he says to the first man, and "Jesus said to love even your enemy," to the second. To both he says, "You are loved by the same God; demonstrate your love for Him." The men are startled. One man's lip trembles; the other is moved by seeing the change in his demeanor. They each feel their devotion calming their emotion and reflect the same to the other. By overcoming their anger they have successfully tested their spiritual values. Both are humbled, but also strengthened in faith. (Told to us by Vilayat Inayat Khan)

  3. A woman is diagnosed with breast cancer and scheduled for surgery and radiation. She calls her spiritual healer and arranges to visit. The healer puts her in a retreat hut and guides her on a one-week retreat, cooking for her and frequently meditating with her, but never mentioning the cancer. At night, while the woman meditates alone, the healer consciously absorbs her illness at a distance and neutralizes it within the healer's heart by a special breath practice. When the woman returns home, she requests a second examination; the radiologist is astonished to find no sign of cancer in her breasts. (Susanna was the healer.)

  4. A manager is ordered to cut her staff by ten percent to reduce expenses. Thinking about her people that she knows well, she feels the impact of job loss on their lives and their children's lives. Knowing she will be fired herself if she can't make the firing decisions demanded of her, she decides to risk a different approach. Calling the staff for an emergency weekend meeting, they conceive together a change in procedure that will cut their production expenses by an amount equivalent to one-tenth of the group's salary, without reducing volume, and the manager sweetens the deal by taking a five percent cut in her own pay. The package is accepted by upper management and all the jobs in her group are saved. (Observed by Puran in his management consulting)

When you can bring harmony to others, recognize a person's greatness, real needs and higher purpose in life, worship the heart in every religion with as much knowledge and devotion as the priesthood of each religion, cause tissue repair in the body of another, or lead from the heart to build loyalty and creativity in a crisis, you have participated in the miraculous. These are only moments in the lives of mentors, celebrants, healers and leaders of our time, performing everyday wonders with their hearts. There are countless other examples of the miracles that hearts generate.

Our wish for you this season of miracles, in which the light begins to increase its presence in our lives, is that the joy which has created you and the love which sustains you may increase in your heart day-by-day and extend to many others.
