IAM: Institute for Applied Meditation

Optimism is the natural outcome of a strong heart. When optimism is slowly eroded over time, it can be restored by Heart Rhythm Practice. Research has shown that optimism is independent of one's immediate circumstance because optimistic people consistently interpret their circumstances positively. However, the heart can be weakened over decades of disappointment and struggle, or by "compassion fatigue." Optimism requires power in the emotional heart, and this cannot be provided by will-power or intention.

Heart Rhythm Practice is a methodology that can restore optimism when performed individually with periodic group support. It causes entrainment of the biological oscillators of heartbeat, breath rate and brain waves. This results in a strongly centered experience of increased personal power including awareness, empathy, creativity, confidence and joyous radiance. From this powerfully enriching and empowering experience, repeated daily for 20 minutes, the emotional heart is able to heal and strengthen. Optimism is an immediate result.

Optimism has been correlated with:

  • longer lifespan
  • better overall health
  • more rapid rate of recovery from surgery
  • less rehospitilization for complications
  • better psychological and physical health under stress
  • improved immunocompetence in response to stress
  • successful relationships
  • success in business
  • favored classroom teachers
  • long-term effectiveness as a health-care provider
Who Should Attend
This method is especially well-suited to
  • therapists and their clients,
  • health-care providers and their patients,
  • teachers,
  • business managers,
  • salespeople,
  • parents and
  • single people
for personal improvement, enhancement of success and relationships, recovery from compassion fatigue and rapid recovery from illness.

Consciously drawing upon the body-mind connection between the physical heart and the emotional capacity, Heart Rhythm Practice is an adjunct to psychological therapy. This substance-free method can be safely self-administered. Because it emphasizes physical sensation, it is free of the dissociative consequences of meditation. Health care providers can easily teach the basics of the method to their patients. Further experience can be developed over five stages.

Seminar Content
The power and capacity of the heart may be restored by concentration on the physical heart, breathing rhythmically, expanding the scope of attention, and honoring one's past experiences. We aim for a lasting benefit, not a "seminar high," by teaching a well-defined method you can use yourself and pass on to others. The approach is participative and experiential. A booklet included with the seminar will summarize the main points of the method and allow you to recreate the seminar experience on your own.
